Consortium of Self Help Group Approach Promoters (CoSAP) is an umbrella of SHG promoting organizations. Members, who adopt the SHG approach as a key tool for the empowerment of women, utilize this platform as a unifying mechanism for the implementation of the approach. This objective is realized through the provision of capacity building training to member organization and representing them in any policy level discussion that paves the ground for the proliferation of the approach.

Community of Practice - CoPs {tab title=" CwDs " class=" blue" }

·       Who are Children with Disabilities?

      Girls and boys below the age of 18 years with any long term problems in body function and structure such as significant deviation or loss and include physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory problems.

Disability is beyond impairment:

It is the interaction of the impairment with barriers resulting in increasing the risk of vulnerabilities and discrimination and marginalization.

Impairment + Barriers     = Disability

Barriers are things that hinder children with impairments from participating in society on an equal basis with others; having nothing to do with a child’s body or function. Most common barriers include attitudinal, environmental, institutional and communication.

Alarming Facts about the Vulnerabilities of Children with Disabilities to Abuse and Violence

·       Children with disabilities are 4 times at risk of violence and abuse than their peers without disabilities

·       Children with disabilities are at increased risk for maltreatment

·       Girls with disabilities are heightened risk of experiencing violence/abuse

Consorted Commitment to Safeguard Children with Disabilities

14 local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), committed to improving the lives of children with disabilities, have come together as Community of Practice (COP) to address the increased risks of children to abuse and violence. CoP families (the 14 CSOs) strongly believe that ensuring the protection rights of children with disabilities are not a ‘reward’ of development, but are critical to achieving development. Also, respecting and fulfilling the right to protection is key to promoting the realization of the other rights; hence quality of life of children with disabilities. Accordingly, CoP families decided to consort their effort, expertise and resources to addressing the barriers and promote inclusion and to enhance safe environment and institution for children with disabilities. The CoP is an initiative that only started recently (less than one year old) which is evolving.
